Fractional CTO providing technology leadership and strategic advisory for growing businesses
Fractional CTO

Every tech decision you make without guidance is a coin flip.

A full-time CTO runs $200K+ a year. But flying blind on technology? That's costing you too — in bad vendor deals, tools you don't need, and decisions you're not confident in. I give you the technology leadership your business needs, on a schedule and budget that actually makes sense.

Jeremy Buff — Technology Strategist

I handle the tech decisions so you don't have to. I'm here to make sure your technology actually works for your business and keeps you from getting pushed around by vendors or your own developers.

Technology without leadership is just expensive guessing.

Most business owners don't realize how much they're losing to bad tech decisions until someone finally takes a hard look. Here's where it usually hurts.

You're buying based on demos, not strategy

A slick sales rep shows you a platform that 'does everything.' You sign a 12-month contract. Three months in, your team barely uses it, it doesn't connect to your other tools, and you're locked in. Sound familiar?

Your agency answers to no one

They quoted you $40K for a website rebuild. Is that fair? Is the scope right? Are they padding hours? You don't know — because you don't have anyone on your side who speaks their language.

Your tools don't talk to each other

You're paying for a CRM, a project manager, an email tool, a scheduling app, and an invoicing platform — and none of them share data. So your team copies and pastes between tabs all day.

You don't know what you don't know about security

A client asks if you're SOC 2 compliant. A vendor wants to know about your data handling policy. You're not even sure what that means — and you're hoping nobody notices.

Every business runs on technology now. The question is — is yours running for you, or against you?

What I Do

Everything a CTO does. Without the overhead.

Technology Strategy

You're juggling a dozen tools, none of them connect, and you have no idea which ones you actually need. I audit your entire tech stack, cut what's wasting money, and build a clear roadmap for what comes next — prioritized by impact, not hype.

Architecture & Infrastructure

Your website crashes when traffic spikes. Your database is held together with duct tape. Your app was 'built to scale' by an agency that hasn't touched it in a year. I assess what you've got, design what you need, and make sure the foundation is solid before you build on top of it.

Vendor Management

Your web agency just quoted you a six-figure rebuild. Your SaaS rep says you need the enterprise tier. I sit on your side of the table — evaluating proposals, negotiating contracts, reviewing deliverables, and holding vendors accountable for what they promised.

Team Leadership

Your developer is talented but working in a vacuum. Your outsourced team delivers code but nobody reviews it. I provide the technical leadership your team needs — code reviews, architecture guidance, sprint planning, and mentorship that raises the bar.

Software Implementation

You bought a CRM nobody uses. Your tools don't talk to each other. Your team copies and pastes between tabs all day. I pick the right tools for your business, set them up properly, connect everything, and make sure your team actually knows how to use them.

AI Integration

You know AI could help your business, but you don't know where to start — and you don't trust the salespeople selling it. I cut through the noise, identify where AI actually makes sense for your business, and lead the implementation from strategy to launch.

Before & After

What changes when you have a technology leader in your corner.

Without a CTO

  • Tech decisions made based on sales demos and gut feelings
  • No one reviewing what your agency or dev team delivers
  • Paying for tools you don't use or that overlap each other
  • Security gaps you don't even know about
  • Every tech question gets Googled or outsourced to whoever's cheapest
  • Technology is a cost center that drains budget with unclear return

With a Fractional CTO

  • Every tech investment tied to a clear business outcome
  • Vendors and agencies held accountable for quality and deadlines
  • A streamlined tech stack where every tool earns its place
  • Security posture you can confidently speak to
  • A technology leader on call who knows your business inside and out
  • Technology becomes a competitive advantage that drives growth

See yourself in any of these? Let's talk about what technology leadership could look like for your business.

Cross-functional team collaborating on technology strategy with executive CTO guidance

How it starts

I don't show up with a pre-built playbook. I learn your business first, then build the strategy around it.

01

Discovery

We start with a conversation. I learn how your business works — what tools you use, who manages what, where decisions get stuck, and what's keeping you up at night. No pitch. Just listening.

02

Assessment

I dig into your tech stack, your vendor relationships, your security posture, and your team's capabilities. You get a clear, honest picture of where you stand — what's working, what's wasting money, and what's putting you at risk.

03

Roadmap

I deliver a prioritized technology roadmap — what to fix now, what to invest in next, and what can wait. Every recommendation ties back to a business outcome, not a shiny feature.

04

Execution

I don't hand you a plan and disappear. I stick around to lead the execution — managing vendors, guiding your team, overseeing implementations, and adjusting the strategy as your business evolves.

"Amazing work. Has a keen eye for design, the tech guru that's needed, far spectrum of skills from web dev, SEO, layout, and more. No matter the size of the project, he will elevate any business."

Engagement Options

How engagement works

Every business is different. Some need a strategic sounding board. Others need someone hands-on with their team. I flex to fit what you actually need — not the other way around.

Advisory

You're the one making decisions, but you want someone experienced to pressure-test your thinking. We meet regularly so I can review your tech roadmap, evaluate vendors, weigh in on architecture choices, and keep you from making expensive mistakes.

  • Bi-weekly strategy calls
  • Slack/email access for quick questions
  • Vendor & tool evaluations
  • Strategic roadmap development

Embedded

I plug into your team as your part-time CTO. I attend standups, review code, manage your agency relationship, lead technical planning, and give your team the leadership layer they've been missing.

  • Weekly hands-on engagement
  • Direct team & vendor management
  • Architecture & code oversight
  • AI integration leadership

Project-Based

You have a specific challenge — a technology audit, an AI readiness assessment, a system migration, or a vendor selection. I scope it, execute it, and hand it off clean.

  • Defined scope & deliverables
  • Fixed timeline with clear milestones
  • Executive summary & recommendations
  • Handoff documentation

FAQ

Common questions about fractional CTO services.

What exactly does a fractional CTO do?

Everything a full-time CTO does — technology strategy, vendor management, team leadership, security oversight, architecture decisions — just on a part-time basis. I become your technology leader without the $200K+ salary and benefits package. I show up, take ownership of the technology side of your business, and make sure every tech decision serves your bottom line.

How many hours per week do you typically work with a client?

It depends on the engagement. Advisory clients typically get bi-weekly strategy calls plus async access for quick questions — maybe 4-6 hours per month. Embedded clients get more hands-on time — usually 10-20 hours per week with direct team and vendor management. Project-based work has a defined scope and timeline. We figure out what you actually need in the discovery call.

I already have a developer (or agency). Do I still need a fractional CTO?

That's actually one of the most common situations I walk into. Your developer is talented, but they're working without direction. Your agency delivers code, but nobody on your side knows if it's good code. A fractional CTO provides the leadership layer — reviewing what's being built, setting technical standards, managing priorities, and making sure the work aligns with your business goals. I don't replace your team. I make them better.

How is this different from hiring a technology consultant?

Most consultants hand you a report and leave. I stick around. A fractional CTO is an ongoing relationship — I learn your business, build relationships with your team and vendors, and take ownership of technology outcomes over time. I'm not advising from the outside. I'm embedded in the work, accountable for results, and adapting the strategy as your business evolves.

What industries do you work with?

I work with small to mid-size businesses across a range of industries — healthcare, legal, home services, marine, hospitality, real estate, insurance, and more. The common thread isn't the industry — it's the situation: a growing business that runs on technology but doesn't have a dedicated technology leader. If that sounds like you, we should talk.

Do you require long-term contracts?

No. I don't lock you into anything. Advisory and embedded engagements are month-to-month. Project-based work has a defined scope and timeline. If the engagement is working, you'll keep it going because it's delivering value — not because you're contractually obligated. That said, most of my clients stay on because the relationship compounds over time.
